Old Town Alexandria is a historic neighborhood located in Alexandria, Virginia. This neighborhood has a quaint and colonial feel to it and offers an easily accessible metro station as well as an Amtrak train station.

West of the Potomac River & North of Huntington

Old Town Alexandria is roughly belted by the Potomac River to the east, I-495 and I-95 to the south, Main Line Boulevard to the west, and the Daingerfield Island to the north. South of the neighborhood is Huntington, to the north and northwest are Potomac Yard and Del Ray respectively, and across the Potomac to the east are Bellevue, Washington, D.C. and Forest Heights, Maryland.

Old Town with a Contemporary Lifestyle

Old Town, much like Alexandria, is full of history. Some can date it back to when the Native Americans first settled on the land, and during the colonial times it was part of the original Washington, D.C. Alexandria’s Old Town district was established in 1946 as only the third historic district designated in the United States. Its concentration on historic buildings with a detailed past creates a rich backdrop for today’s modern lifestyle.

Two Metro Stations & Alexandria Amtrak

One of the best things about living in Old Town Alexandria is its location to an Amtrak station which allows easy access to Maryland, DC, and the rest of Virginia. This historic railroad station links Amtrak, VRE, and the Metro together while being serviced by a number of Alexandria DASH and Metrobus lines. Near the train station is the King Street Metro station which runs on the Blue and Yellow lines. Further north, and keeping on the same tracks, is the Braddock Road station.

The George Washington Parkway also runs through the gut of the neighborhood, while Route 1 is another viable option. Moreover, any of the aforementioned stations will take you to nearby Ronald Reagan Airport while I-495 and I-95 are also close by.

Desirable Listings to Choose From

This densely built neighborhood is very walk able as well, as most people compare it to Georgetown with its narrow streets, and tree-shaded blocks. The real estate in Old Town Alexandria ranges from condos, apartment buildings, and townhouses which are mostly located in the northeast section of the neighborhood, to old, well-maintained colonial row houses which can mostly be found in the southeast section of the community.

King Street for Entertainment & Dining Options

Many restaurants near the river offer plenty of terrific food and beautiful views like Chart House—an upscale seafood restaurant. Washington Marina is another great location as it offers sailing lessons. However, beware of tourists as buses are constantly dropping people down and up the waterfront.

Columbia Firehouse is a powerhouse restaurant in Old Town. This remade firehouse serves some American eats and old-fashioned drinks. Also located off of King Street is Taverna Cretekou. This relaxed space offers an outdoor garden style seating and plenty of authentic Greek foods such as grilled baby octopus, lamb, and flaming cheese dishes. Other restaurants worth mentioning are Majestic, Vermilion, Jackson 20, Virtue Feed & Grain, and Restaurant Eve.

For entertainment, check out Metrostage. This theater in northern Old Town is a professional non-profit theater company hosting contemporary plays and musicals. Little Theater of Alexandria is a community theater located on Wolfe Street and offers adult and youth classes.

Museums, Parks & the Arts

The Torpedo Factory Art Center was once a torpedo factory and munitions storage site. This art center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and consists of more than 82 artists’ studios and 6 galleries. Located on North Union Street, this spot features a variety of collections from artists who showcase their paintings, photos and other pieces.

Down South Washington Street is The Lyceum: Alexandria’s History Museum. Built in 1839, this grand hall tells the city’s story from Colonial times through the 20th Century. The Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden is another wonderful building within the neighborhood. Constructed in 1785 from the Lee family, this restored building has been made to look as it was in the mid-19th century. Other notable museums include the Alexandria Black History Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum.

Old Town Alexandria is home to a lot of parks that are historic, family-friendly, or on the waterfront. Jones Point Park is located just south of Old Town, and its lighthouse build in 1855 is the last remaining riverine lighthouse in Virginia. This park has terrific spots for fishing, trails, two playgrounds, two basketball courts, and a multi-use field. Founders Park is located on North Union Street and features a dog exercise area, volleyball court, and walking paths. This spot is exceptionally well for picnicking, and enjoying the flowers and the view as you can also stroll along the shore. Some other notable parks are the Oronoco Bay Park, Tide Lock Park, Windmill Hill Park, and Fort Ward Park.

Old Town Alexandria is an idyllic small town becoming more and more cosmopolitan than other nearby neighborhoods. Its small town atmosphere offers beautiful greenery; affordable housing in different varieties, and its location to Amtrak and some major roads allows the residents to not be completely out of bounds of Washington, D.C. and other cities.
