Located in the U.S. state of Maryland, Calvert County is situated in the southern region of the state and contains one of the highest median household incomes in the country. Its county seat is Prince Frederick while the county also occupies the Calvert Peninsula.

Southern Maryland

Containing a total land area of about 350 square miles, the Calvert Peninsula is bordered to the east by the Chesapeake Bay and by the Patuxent River to the west. Near the northern tip of the county lie major communities like Dunkirk, North Beach, and Chesapeake Beach. Its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay has a moderating effect on temperatures compared with locales further inland and its total area of 345 square miles makes it the smallest county in Maryland. Adjacent counties include Anne Arundel, St. Mary’s, Prince George’s, and Charles County.

Named for the Calvert Family

Founded in 1654 and named after the family name of the Barons of Baltimore, Calvert County is one of the oldest counties in Maryland, after St. Mary’s, Kent, and Anne Arundel County. Once made up primarily of farms and tobacco fields, the county has become a fast-growing exurban neighbor of Washington, DC. Many tourists also flock to the area as popular weekend resort in the  towns of Solomons, Chesapeake Beach, and North Beach. Calvert County also boasts a number of properties and structures listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. These range from All Saint’s Church, Drum Point Lighthouse, and Taney Place.

Maryland Route 4

Taney Place is located south of Adelina and can be reached by Route 508. However, the main artery of Calvert County is Route 4, which begins in Washington, DC as Pennsylvania Avenue before crossing into Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel County in Maryland. In this county, it begins near the northern tip at Lyons Creek, approximately 3 miles north of Dunkirk. Route 2 is also noteworthy and stems off from Route 4 near Solomons. Other major roadways in Calvert County include Route 260 and 231—which travels west from Prince Frederick to the Patuxent River, ultimately crossing the river at the Benedict Bridge into Charles County.

Waterfront Homes

Housing properties located along the shoreline of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay are some of the most sought-after houses in the county. Other highly rated attributes about the county are its quality schools, unlimited offering of recreational fun, and a secure and calm atmosphere. Most of the neighborhoods here are quiet and offer single-family detached homes and some townhouses. The county is also roughly an hour drive from Washington, DC and yet offers one of the lowest costs of living in the greater metro area. So, it’s no wonder why so many new homeowners are discovering one of Maryland’s best kept secrets.

Seafood Spots & Other Restaurants

The majority of well-known restaurants, bars, and nightclubs in the county are located in some of the more populated towns like Solomons, North Beach, Chesapeake Beach, and Prince Frederick. Seafood restaurants are also aplenty with most of them bordering the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay. Rod N’ Reel Restaurant is located at the Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa and is a bright and airy eatery on the bay featuring local crab, oysters, and a popular Sunday buffet. Further north on Chesapeake Avenue is Westlawn Inn—an upscale American spot offering traditional cuisine and wine in a 1926 house also offering jazz nights and porch seating.

Jerry’s Place is situated near Prince Frederick and is a family-own fish spot mostly known for their crab cakes, fish dishes, and homemade desserts in warm, welcoming digs decorated with family murals. In Solomons you can find Ruddy Duck Brewery & Grill—a casual brewpub with dark wood decor serving dishes such as hearth-filled pizza, steak, and crab cakes. Boomerangs Original Ribs is an old school barbecue joint just a stone’s throw away from Solomons. This casual eatery features BBQ favorites such as baby back ribs and seafood entrees.

With abundant of unique shops, museums, excellent restaurants, natural parks and interesting festivals, Calvert County has earned its nickname, the “Charm of the Chesapeake.”

Natural Parks & Water Activities

Neighborhood and state parks found in this county range from Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, Flag Ponds Nature Park, Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum, as well as Calvert Cliffs State Park. Located in Lusby, Calvert Cliffs is a 1,460-acre wooded state park adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay. Formed over 15 million years ago, the cliffs contain more than 600 species of fossils. It’s an area ideal for hiking, picnicking, fishing, and fossil hunting. Kings Landing Park is in Huntingtown and on the opposite end of the bay and is a 260-acre park on the Patuxent River and Cocktown Creek. It offers a variety of outdoor activities like picnic tables with shelters and grills, wetlands boardwalk, fishing pier, launch area for canoes and kayaks, swimming pools, horse ring, as well as a camping site for young children.

The Chesapeake Beach Water Park is located on its namesake town and is a family-friendly destination featuring pools, slides and waterfalls plus private cabana rentals making it the perfect getaway for tourists. Also located here are the Chesapeake Beach Town Hall and the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum. To the north in Rose Haven is Herrington Harbour South—a bay front resort offering traditional lodging in a circa-1950 building with private beaches and seasonal outdoor recreation.
