Guide to Cleveland Park

Medium Rare Restaurant in Washington DC's Cleveland Park Neighborhood
Neighborhood Shops in Washington, DC's Cleveland Park

Cleveland Park is a name associated with deep-rooted history, historic houses and luxurious living.  In more recent years the area has also begun to step back on the scene as a commercial center. Local residents and developers have worked hard to revamp the neighborhood and with apartments and new business popping up and filling once empty storefronts the neighborhood has definitely stepped in to the lime light as an in-demand DC neighborhood for a variety of occupants.

Historic Vacation Destination

Due to its upland topography, Cleveland Park maintains a slightly cooler and breezier atmosphere than the lower lying areas in DC. Historically, many upper class Washingtonians chose the area as a summer getaway, most notably, President Grover Cleveland. After securing a stone farmhouse in the area and remodeling as his summer estate, the area adopted his nomenclature and became what is now known as ‘Cleveland Park.’

As the years passed and transportation to beach and countryside areas became more accessible, Cleveland Park dropped its vacation homes and slowly became a bustling city neighborhood. The heart of the neighborhood lies in the active commercial district on Connecticut Avenue. Like most DC neighborhoods, Cleveland Park experienced a tough growing period, but recently it has been revived and the neighborhood has returned to its former glory. New restaurants and shops continue to open in the area, reassuring Cleveland Park’s permanency on the DC neighborhood docket.

Making a Comeback while Preserving History

Cleveland park is taking the reigns on its future by preserving its past, with many historically centered spots. One of the neighborhood’s highlights comes in the form of Ripple, an “upscale casual restaurant” located right on Connecticut Ave. The café puts a strong emphasis on sustainability, focusing on organic and locally grown produce.  Ripple is also grape friendly, being named one of the Wine Enthusiast’s top 100 Wine Restaurants in America.

Right across the street is another fun and historical spot that defines the neighborhood, Uptown Movie Theater. Since its inaugural showing in 1936 the theater has hosted several Hollywood premieres, with big name titles, including 1968’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and 1993’s Jurassic Park. Its exciting history, combined with balcony seating and a 70 ft. tall screen make the Uptown Theater one of Washington’s best and most unique theaters.

Central Location in the Northwest

Cleveland Park is located in the Northwest quadrant of DC above Woodley Park and below Forest Hills. The neighborhood is directly bordered by Rock Creek Park to the east, Tilden and Upton Streets to the north, 37th Street, Wisconsin Ave and 34th Street to the West and Woodley road to the South.

An Abundance of Public Transit

Cleveland Park has its own metro station on the Red Line and a plethora of bus lines running through it, including the D32, H2, H3, H4, L1, L2 and the L4. While parking is easier on the residential streets, it is trickier closer to Connecticut and Wisconsin Ave.

Gorgeous Homes and Apartments

Some of the most beautiful and expensive homes in the District are located in Cleveland Park. Many of these houses feature sloping lawns and large front porches, reflecting their original purpose as summer estates.  The style here varies a lot but primarily features colonial, bungalow, mission and tudor style homes.

Detached houses are in high demand in the area, but apartments and condos can also be found on Connecticut and Wisconsin Ave. Those looking for an apartment here won’t be disappointed as many feature gyms, rooftop pools & terraces.

Natural Beauty and Historical Roots

Cleveland Park is adjacent to one of DC’s greatest retreats, Rock Creek Park. Situated between the northwest and northeast quadrants, the Rock Creek Park and Nature Center is a green gem in the middle of the nation’s capital, servicing a a multitude of outdoor activities. With a 20-mile bike trail, horse paths, tennis courts, a golf course and even Civil War forts, athletes, families and history aficionados alike can all find what they’re looking for at a day in the park.

Surrounding the park are many other interesting activities, including the Tregaron Estate, one of the last standing estates designed by the famous architect of the American Renaissance, Charles Adams Platt. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Tregaron Estate is surrounded by 20 acres of beautifully landscaped scenery left untouched by developers.

Looking at a Brighter Future

Overall, Cleveland Park is a neighborhood on the rise. Though its houses are on the more expensive side, the area offers a variety of things to do and places to eat. The upcoming years will continue to bring new businesses and development to Cleveland Park as the neighborhood continues to change and find its identity.
