Bean Rush Cafe in Crownsville, Maryland
Crownsville Hospital Center Eisenhower Golf Course in Crownsville, Maryland

Crownsville is a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Mostly known for hosting the annual Maryland Renaissance Festival and the Anne Arundel County Fair, the area is also well received because of the spectacular waterfront sceneries and its terrific location to other major neighborhoods.

Southeast of Odenton

Crownsville is roughly belted by Herald Harbor Road to the north, Severn River Sanctuary to the east, the Generals Highway Corridor Park to the south, and Bacon Ridge Branch Creek to the west. Herald Harbor and then Arden-On-The-Severn borders the community to the north, Sherwood Forest to the east, Parole to the south, and Odenton and Crofton to the west. Neighborhoods like Annapolis, Arnold, and Severna Park are also nearby.

A Brief History

Before the 1920s, the Crownsville area was mostly farmland, but over the course of that period, four very large planned communities were developed: Epping Forest, Sherwood Forest, Herald Harbor and Arden. Although it is not entirely known how the area got its name, original settlement of the Crownsville area was created shortly around the 19th century. Now, the area is home to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, the remains of the former psychiatric hospital—The Crownsville Hospital Center, and the Anne Arundel County Food Bank, which provides no-cost food assistance programs, a soup kitchen, and distribution of medical equipment among other things.

Getting Around the Area

Route 178 runs through the center of this community while I-97 forms the southwestern edge of the neighborhood. Route 178 is a direct shot towards Annapolis, while I-97 allows residents easy access to Glen Burnie and eventually downtown Baltimore. Baltimore is roughly 25 minutes away, Washington, DC is close to 40 minutes away, and the BWI Airport is around a 15 minute drive. The Baltimore-Washington International Airport also provides access via bus routes. Other important routes located in and around the Crownsville area include Route 3, 50 and 450.

Housing Stock in Crownsville

A wonderful aspect about living in Crownsville is it’s simply one of the best areas to live in Anne Arundel County. One reason for this is the abundance of diverse housing environments and housing styles that are a part of the community. In certain areas, you can find a living situation totally surrounded by beautiful, large trees and lots of water nearby for boating and other water activities. You can also find more urban neighborhoods with a much livelier vibe. Popular architectural styles for single-family detached homes are colonials, contemporaries, ramblers, craftsman, ranchers and cape cods.

Travel to Annapolis for Food & Entertainment

Although the area of Crownsville has many notable restaurants and establishments like Lures Bar and Grille or the Bean Rush Cafe, many residents enjoy travelling to nearby Annapolis where you can find Westfield Annapolis and Annapolis Towne Centre. These wonderful shopping malls are located across the street from one another and are also surrounded by other, smaller shopping centers. Some stores and shopping destinations found here include an Apple Store, Nordstrom, Lord & Taylor, T.J Maxx, JC Penney and Michaels among others. For quality grocery stores there are Giant, Whole Foods Market, and Trader Joe’s and for entertainment there is a Chuck E. Cheese’s and Bow Tie Cinemas.

If you’re looking for great food, the aforementioned Lures Bar & Grille is a wonderful, local place that has been open for many years. Musical bands energize this American bar and grill serving amazing local seafood and an extensive rotating craft-beer selection. Jalapenos is located in Forest Plaza, in nearby Annapolis and is a great fixture offering Spanish and Mexican menus, including sangrias and margaritas all within a frescoed setting. Another restaurant located near the shopping centers of Annapolis is Double T Diner. This local diner chain is open 24-hours a day and comes with a retro vibe, and a menu that features many classic comfort-food dishes like chicken breast Florentine, fried shrimp and pork chops, and homemade meatloaf. Other notable restaurants located around this area include Paladar Latin Kitchen & Rum Bar, The Melting Pot, P.F. Chang’s, The Cheesecake Factory and Eggcellence.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival

The Eisenhower Golf Club, named after the U.S. President, is a golf course located south of the neighborhood. This 6,659-yard course is generally open to active duty, retired military, reservists, National Guard and their guests. The 18-hole course was designed by golf architect Ed Ault on more than 220 acres. The Generals Highway Corridor Park is located just south of the course and is situated on Crownsville Road. The park is located near the site of the annual Maryland Renaissance Festival and features plenty of amenities like 4 baseball diamonds, 2 soccer fields, a tennis court, picnic areas and a playground. Other nearby green spaces includes Waterworks Park and Broad Creek Park.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival is one of the area’s main highlights and is set in a fictional 16th-century English village named Revel Grove. Spread over 25 acres, this fair is the second largest renaissance fair in the United States, and it’s open from the last weekend of August and runs for nine weekends. The Maryland Renaissance Festival utilizes eight major theaters, four smaller stages in taverns, a children’s area, and a jousting tiltyard with seating for 3,000.
