Guide to Foggy Bottom / West End

Simon Bolivar Statue in Washington DC's Foggy Bottom Neighborhood
Watergate Complex in Washington DC's Foggy Bottom Neighborhood

Welcome to Foggy Bottom, one of the most well connected neighborhoods in the district, and we aren’t just referring to the politicians who work here. The Foggy Bottom neighborhood is conveniently sandwiched right between Georgetown and The National Mall, making it a great spot to live and work. In the residential areas of this neighborhood you will find suits, students and young professionals all coexisting in one, prime location.

Right between Georgetown and the National Mall

Foggy Bottom is just south of Dupont and is bounded by Pennsylvania Avenue NW to the North, 17th St to the East, Connecticut Avenue to the South and Rock Creek Parkway to the West. Foggy bottom is a great place to call home because it’s close to Georgetown and the National Mall, but more than likely, even closer to work.  Unlike many other neighborhoods one thing you won’t have to worry about in Foggy Bottom is a long commute.

What’s in a Name?

Foggy Bottoms gets its name from the damp fog that used to rise from the nearby Potomac River when the area was more industrial. However this isn’t noticeable today, and ironically Foggy Bottom is also the site of the US Observatory. Besides its interesting name, the area hosts several notable landmarks that include the Kennedy Center for Performing arts, George Washington University’s main campus, the Eisenhower executive building, and a number of foreign embassies. Many people find the area very historically fascinating, not only is it one of the oldest neighborhoods in DC, dating back to the 18th century, but it was also the site of one of the most infamous political scandals in history — Watergate.

Orange, Blue, Silver and the Metrobus

Transportation is no issue in Foggy Bottom, which is directly serviced by the Foggy Bottom — GWU Washington Metro Station, serving the blue, orange and silver lines. In addition to that it’s only two stops from Metro Center, so anywhere you need to get on the Red Line is easily accessible. In addition to riding the train, the bus is also a great option; the Metrobus covers routes 31, 32, 36, 37, 38B, 39, 80, H1, L1, N3, S1 and X1. Many residents of Foggy Bottom choose to bike to work because of the areas prime location. There are also several bike shops nearby with great reviews!

Quaint Townhomes and Luxury Condos

One of the biggest advantages of living in Foggy Bottom is that while residents experience all of the perks of big city living, many residential options are tucked away in quieter, more peaceful environments. Colorful townhomes line cobblestone streets, and the federal-style architecture amidst more modern buildings gives Foggy Bottom a unique vibe that can’t be found in many other parts of the District. If luxury condos are more your style there are plenty to be found throughout the neighborhood, and in recent years Foggy Bottom has become home to some of DC’s most exclusive addresses, including the Columbia and the residences at the Ritz Carlton.

Trader Joe’s, Founding Farmers, and Happy Hour

Foggy Bottom boasts the original Trader Joe’s location in Washington DC and is also home to a newer Whole Foods. The area is great for those who are health conscious, but also looking to eat well — one of DC’s best farm-to-table restaurants, Founding Farmers calls the neighborhood home serving specialty craft cocktails, homemade breads and many hearty entrees. Upscale dining can also be found here at the Ritz’s restaurant, ris or at the Blue Duck Tavern.  However those looking for a more laid-back environment won’t be disappointed when 5 o’clock rolls around, marking the start of happy hour in Foggy Bottom.

While there aren’t very many late-night spots in the direct neighborhood, there are plenty of places to grab a drink with friends or coworkers. One of the most popular bars in the area is the Black Rooster Pub, which has been dubbed by locals as a “Cheers” style bar that’s perfect for grabbing a beer after work with friends. Another go-to, neighborhood favorite for professionals, and for GW students, is Tonic at Quigley’s, which offers a great happy hour menu along with some awesome bar food including tater tots, burgers, hummus and more.

Plays, Trails & Views

Foggy Bottom is host to many sources of entertainment, including the crown jewel of Washington, DC, the Kennedy center for Performing Arts. The Kennedy Center is a beautiful white building on the Potomac that holds musicals, plays, skits, shows, orchestras and more. In addition to the Kennedy Center, Foggy Bottom also plays host to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, one of the oldest galleries in DC that includes pieces by Monet, Rembrandt and Picasso, just to name a few.

After stepping outside a gallery or show, Foggy Bottom still remains breathtaking. The neighborhood’s waterfront location and proximity to Rock Creek Park allow residents to still feel in touch with nature in the city. Those looking to get in touch with nature can take a stroll along the waterfront, or even walk on one of the areas nature trails. With arts, nature, business and academics all in one place, it’s safe to say that those looking for diverse sources of entertainment will feel right at home in Foggy Bottom.
