Nature walk along the water's edge of the Potomac River includes a walking trail and interpretive signs pertaining to it's history. Nice place for the nature lover, family and pet friendly. Beautiful spot to visit.
Come visit Government Island, a 17 acre historic park also referred to as "America's Historic Stone Quarry" which provided Aquia sandstone for the construction of the United States Capitol and the White House. The stone was shipped up the Potomac River. Walk on the boardwalk and observe birds and other wildlife. As you tour the Island, you will learn about the quarry workers and the Native American presence. Admission is free.

As part of the Stafford County Parks and Recreation and just past the community of Greenridge in North Stafford, Government Island is the place where the US Government's most famous buildings were born. It is a historic 18th and 19th century quarry site provided Aquia Sandstone for the construction of the US Capitol and White House among others.The park consist of walking trails and even a path through a wall of granite. Definitely a bit of hidden history and a site to see in Stafford County.

Government Island is a park and historic quarry that dates back to the 18th Century. In the 17 acre park located in Stafford county, there are walking trails, a boardwalk where wildlife, birds and native plants can be seen. There is also a small playground for children and the historical landmarks and signage can be used as a history lesson to families and children. Government Island's historical significance dates back to the 18th Century. The park is easily accessible from Rte 1, just off of I-95, exit 140.
This historic park located on Aquia Creek has a gorgeous nature and history filled walking/jogging path. Sandstone was quarried from this 17 acre site for use in the construction of the white House and U.S. Capital building. My beagles are beyond excited when they see us get out their leashes. Chances are we are headed for a beautiful walk along the trails of Government Island.
