Loudoun County is a highly sought after location that is known for its picturesque neighborhoods and historic charm.  People are drawn to Loudoun County for its acres of untouched land, an established technology corridor nearby, and great public amenities.  Loudoun is a historic area and is now home to many of Virginia's finest wineries and attract people from all over the DC area. There are plenty of recreation areas in Loudoun as well. Overall, Loudoun is a dynamic suburb of DC with beautiful scenery, homes, wineries, jobs, recreation, and a population active in the community.

History

Settlement in Loudoun County dates back to the 1720s when settlers began to move to the area and some established tobacco plantations. Settlers came from all over including New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. During the War of 1812, Loudoun actually served as a retreat for President Madison while the British attacked Washington. Loudoun also has a rich Civil War History and the Battle of Balls Bluff occurred here, among other battles. Over the years Loudoun stayed very rural until the building of Dulles International Airport in the 1960s. As a result, new businesses moved in, also spurring residential growth. Today, Loudoun is a fast growing, dynamic area that is still known for being removed from the urban pace of life.

Loudoun County is a beautiful area that has many historic homes, sites, wineries, and retains its old fashioned charm although it has grown at a rapid pace. Many people love Loudoun's small town feel and there are plenty of activities including tours, horse shows, country markets, and more. Loudoun is one of the most relaxing suburbs of DC and there are many opportunities here to take advantage of the great outdoors. Within Loudoun are many popular communities including Middleburg, Leesburg, Ashburn, Lansdowne, Sterling, and more.

Shopping

Shopping in Loudoun is great because you can experience the independent shops in the historic downtown or head over to the premium outlet mall with big name retailers. The outlet mall has hundreds of stores to choose from and draws people from across the region.

Recreation

Loudoun has access to numerous recreational opportunities as well as tours and more. There are scenic parks, trails, fields as well as plenty of outdoor activities. Harpers Ferry Adventure Center is a popular place to go for whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and camping. Algonkian Regional Park is another great place to spend the day and this park features golf, picnic areas, a water park for kids, and a reception room for events like weddings or large gatherings.  If you are looking for a great place to go biking or jogging then head over to theWashington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park. This park features a nearly 50 mile biking and jogging trail that leads all the way into Arlington. There are also historic tours throughout Loudoun giving visitors and residents a feel for what life was like in the Civil War era and earlier. Some of these tours include the Mosby Heritage Area Driving Tour, the Journey Through Hallowed Ground (Self Driving Tour), and the Leesburg History Tour where you actually walk inside historic homes in the area.

Where do people live?

There are many options when it comes to living in Loudoun. Recent construction has brought in new townhomes, condos, apartments, and single family homes to the area. Even with the newer developments, residents in Loudoun still enjoy the picturesque country setting and peaceful nature of the town.

Transportation

Loudoun County is about 30 miles outside of DC and has a range of transportation options available.  If you are driving, there are major highways including Route 50, 7, 267, as well as the Loudoun County Parkway. There is also a Loudoun County Commuter Bus that has several stops in Loudoun and brings commuters to DC or Arlington. Located just minutes away are also two airports including Dulles International Airport and the local Leesburg Executive Airport.

Boundaries

Loudoun County is a suburb of DC and is about 520 square miles. Loudoun's northern boundary is the Potomac River, the South it is bounded by Prince William and Fauquier County, Fairfax County to the east and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west.

Entertainment and Restaurant

Loudoun has great local restaurants and shops, especially in the historic downtown areas. Some of the notable restaurants include Tuscarora Mill Restaurant, The Wine Kitchen, A Taste of Burma, and the Restaurant at Potowmack Farm. There are numerous local coffee shops in Loudoun from independently owned to corporate owned stores. Some of the popular cafes and coffee shops include Fresh and Organic Café and Bakery, Saigon Coffee, and Sakasa Tea and Coffee. Loudoun is also home to some award winning vineyards and has over 20 vineyards in total. Many of these sponsor day trips from the city in small or large groups where you can experience the wineries up close and personal. Some of the popular vineyards include Loudoun Valley VineyardsSunset Hills Vineyard, and Bluemont Vineyard.

Nightlife

Loudoun has great nightlife options including local theatres, bars, and the aforementioned dining. Some of these theatres include the Tally Ho Theatre in historic Leesburg which runs feature films as well as comedy, magic, and concerts. The Franklin Park Performing and Visual Arts Center features plays and art shows from local artists. A few of the most notable bars are Vintage 50Lost Rhino Brewing Company, and Sweetwater Tavern.

Loudoun is a beautiful country retreat from DC and has been growing at a rapid pace over the last decade.
