Mount Vernon Square is an exciting, modern North West DC neighborhood that has recently picked up steam over the past ten years as its population has quadrupled! With the addition of modern condominiums alongside classic row homes, Mount Vernon Square defines what it means to live in a modern DC neighborhood—mixing some of the new with some of the old.  Those who move to Mount Vernon find it the perfect blend of places to live, work, shop and dine.

Mount Vernon Square

The Mount Vernon Square, sometimes referred to as The Mount Vernon Triangle, gets its name from two things: The Mount Vernon Square landmark and the shape of the neighborhood. The square is located at the heart of the neighborhood bound by 7th & 5th and L & K streets. The broader neighborhood boundaries are defined by New Jersey Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue and M St, which together make a very distinct triangle.

Abundant Transportation

Within walking distance of Mount Vernon Square are four Metrorail stations, including its own—Mount Vernon Square-Convention Center that services the green and yellow line.  Gallery Place-Chinatown, Judiciary Square and Union Station are nearby.  There is also extensive bus service in the neighborhood that includes the DC Circulator.  And while you definitely won’t need a car living here, I-395, K St and Massachusetts Avenue all service the Triangle.

City Vista is a Main Attraction

The biggest pull for many living in Mount Vernon Square is City Vista, an award-winning, mixed-use development in the heart of the neighborhood.  Within the development are a number of apartments for rent at Gables City Vista and two different condominiums—The K and the L, which together feature over 400 luxury units. Perks to living in the condos include fitness centers, community libraries and a rooftop pool.

In addition to residences City Vista also features several dining and retail options including the DC mainstay and Busboys & Poets, a café that features art, global food and a book store. Also featured in the development are classic options such as Starbucks & Chipotle alongside some more exotic fare including Korean and Sushi. For those looking to cook at home, there is a 59,000 sq. ft. Safeway with a deli, bakery and wine department.

History Resonates in some Residences Here

Alongside the luxury condos offered by City Vista, and other newer developments, are a number of classic DC options that come in the form of three and four-story row houses. Originally developed after the Civil War, many of these homes have been restored to elicit their original 19th century style. 

Lunch, Dinner and Drinks

While there are many tempting dining options just outside of Mount Vernon Triangle in Chinatown, the triangle also holds many delectable eateries.  There are several chains including a DC favorite, Taylor Gourmet, along with Papa John’s, Le Pain Quotidien and Subway.

For those looking to make a night out in the area it’s best to start at Silo, one of the neighborhoods best restaurants, featuring new American dining with creative drinks. After dinner drinks can be found at A&D or Bar 7, which are both Zagat rated bars with specialty drinks and dark, industrial vibes.  For less expensive drinks, locals head to the carving room or Ivy and Coney for craft beers and a more casual atmosphere.

Past & Present

Despite Mt. Vernon’s ultra-modern vibe and sleek city planning, it is an area steeped in DC history, as it was one of the original neighborhoods to be features on the L’Enfant Plan for the city. Prior to, and during the Civil War the area was largely unsettled, with the exception of three large homes that once served as an infirmary during the war. These homes also hosted some very famous historical figures, including Vice President John Breckinridge and President Ulysses S. Grant.

The neighborhood began to grow upon the opening of Northern Liberty Market and throughout history it has followed this same trend as the population of the area has continued to expand with the addition of new businesses. The only exception to this trend was the time following the 1968 riots. The area still has ever-present history and today there are many properties in the area that have been preserved based on their historic status.
