Guide to NOMA / Eckington
Eckington & NoMa have a very intriguing history. Many visitors are pulled to the area when they learn that it is where The Beatles gave their first American performance, but there is much more going on here than just historical significance. Due to its recent popularity and dedicated residents, many new developments and projects have begun to pop up in the area. There is a great future ahead for this large and open area that, at the moment, is composed of unique eateries and affordable housing. Those who visit and live in the area are sure to find many hidden gems.
A Central Location
Located in the west of the northeastern quadrant of the city, NoMa and Eckington are bound by Massachusetts Ave to the south, 1st Street and North Capitol Street to the west, Rhode Island Ave to the north and 4th Street and the Metropolitan Branch Trail to the east.
Getting Around is No Sweat
This area is serviced by the NoMa-Gallaudet U metro station, with the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Station close by to the northeast of Eckington. Several bus lines also run through the neighborhood and Capital Bikeshare stations are scattered throughout. In addition, the Metropolitan Branch Trail runs from Union Station to Silver Spring, Maryland. For getting around within the neighborhood, the many sidewalks make for a very pedestrian-friendly area.
Cheaper than the Next-Door Neighbors
Housing in Eckington is quite similar to the nearby Bloomingdale, although comparatively more affordable. While there are a few condominiums in the neighborhood, what comes to mind when one thinks of this area are rows of townhomes, which are mostly rentals. The price, location, and proximity to local transportation make NOMA a great choice for commuters.
Old Meets New
Eckington is one of the oldest neighborhoods in DC, getting its name from the summer estate of Joseph Gales Jr., newspaper editor and mayor of Washington during the 1820s. Gales named his estate after the village in England where he was born, and it served as a hospital during the Civil War. Afterwards, it became a popular picnic ground for locals.
The area saw more industrial development in the 20th century, with the construction of Union Station and the converging railroad tracks. NoMa is a relatively new development, its name being coined around the 1990s. An abbreviation for North of Massachusetts Avenue, NoMa has taken on its own personality, becoming a sort of brand for the area.
Big Name Retail and Select Local Favorites
Union Station in NoMa is perhaps the area’s biggest commercial center. Boasting a series of seemingly endless stores and restaurants, shoppers can find Ann Taylor, The Body Shop, H&M, Starbucks and Jamba Juice among other big chains here. However, there are some alternatives for people who are looking to try something new. Roti’s Mediterranean Grill, described as a Mediterranean Chipotle, gets rave reviews for its cous cous, hummus and pita pockets. With quick service, it is a convenient stop for lunch on the run.
The area also has a few cafes that locals love. Located on 1st Street, Uptown Café is known for its huge selection of fresh food and drinks. Prices are moderate and the lines are never long, with some favorite menu choices being the turkey avocado sandwich and refreshing mint latte. Also nearby is Café Phillips, which serves a huge selection of fresh meats carved right in front of you with a range of cheeses and toppings. The two golden gems of the area are Indigo, an Indian take out restaurant with a soothing, twinkle-lit patio area and Ebenezer coffee shop, which offers a cozy environment for people watching and latte sipping.
A trip to NOMA would not be complete without a quick walk over to Union Market, one of DCs most unique eateries, which offers cafeteria style seating with boutique food and drinks
Dreaming of a Greener Future
During the sweltering heat and humidity of DC summers, locals love to cool off at the public pool at the Harry Thomas Recreation Center. Located on Lincoln Road, the pool is usually not too crowded, mostly used by a laid back mix of teenagers and families with young children.
Currently, there are no public parks in NoMa, but residents are working hard to change this. Formed in 2012, the NoMa Parks Foundation has vowed to bring publicly accessible green space and dog parks to the neighborhood and will hopefully achieve their goal soon. Despite this, vacant spaces in the neighborhood are still utilized. During the summer free movies and art events are offered in Storey park and most recently a beer garden has opened up in a formerly vacant lot.

When looking for a future home, don’t let NoMa/Eckington fly under the radar. With affordable housing and great shopping and dining options, it is also within easy access of the rest of the city. Residents love their neighborhood, as is evidenced by their dedication to continuing to bring new businesses and developments that will benefit everyone.
