Anne Arundel County was formed from St. Mary's County in 1650. It was named after Anne Arundell, the wife of Cæcilius Calvert. The county has an vast historical background. It has been very important to many military conflicts throughout America's war history. In 1655, the Battle of the Severn of the English Civil War was fought in Anne Arundel. In the War of 1812, the USS Constitution sailed from Annapolis to defeat the HMS Guerriere. In 1694, the capital of Maryland was moved to Annapolis in Anne Arundel County. The many ports of Maryland's capital are located in Anne Arundel.
