Howard County MD History
Howard County was named for Revolutionary War hero and the fifth Governor of Maryland, John Eager Howard. Howard was originally known for its farming but transformed into a quiet suburban county apart of the Washington DC/Baltimore Metropolitan area. It was part of Anne Arundel County until 1851 when it became its own independent entity. Because of Howard's close proximity to major travel routes including the Patapsco River, the B&O Railroad, and major highways, the county has always experienced population and economic growth.
