Montgomery County MD History
The land that now makes up Montgomery County was given by Calvert in 1688 to Henry Darnall. The first farms started appearing on this land in 1715. These farms were known for growing large amounts of tobacco which was shipped down the Potomac River and sold in nearby Georgetown. Montgomery was part of many protests against the British taxation prior to the American Revolution. After 1776, Maryland formed a new state legislature which in turn formed Montgomery County from land that once belonged to Charles, Prince George's, and Frederick Counties. It was named after General Richard Montgomery. In 1791 Maryland gave some of Montgomery County's land to the federal government to form the District of Columbia. Because of the large agricultural economy, slavery was very important to Montgomery's history. Harriet Beecher Stowe's famous book Uncle Tom's Cabin was written about a slave who lived in the county.

Montgomery County runs a public bus service called Ride On and some other major routes are covered by WMATA's Metrobus. The WMATA Metro rail's Red Line ends in Montgomery and both Amtrak and MARC commuter train make stops in the county.

Montgomery is bordered by many counties in Maryland and Virginia. To the northwest is Frederick County, MD and to the northeast is Howard County, MD. To the southeast if Prince George's County, MD and to the south are Washington, DC and the gorgeous Potomac River. On the other side of the Potomac, Montgomery borders Loudoun County, VA and Fairfax County, VA to the west and southwest respectively.
