Prince William County VA History
Prince William County was founded by the General Assembly of the colony of Virginia in 1731. The area included what are now known as Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Manassas. For many years, Prince William was a rural county until an economic boom in 1930. During this time, the majority of the population in the county was west in Manassas and along the Potomac River. Around 1970, the county's population rose exponentially. Today, Prince William is the third most populous county in Virginia. The county is home to the famous Manassas Battlefields used during the Civil War, Prince William Forrest Park, and the new historical National Museum of the Marine Corps.

In the middle of the county are Manassas and Manassas Park, two independent cities contained within Prince William's borders.
