Stafford County VA History
Stafford County is famous for being home to many important historical figures. In 1608, John Smith was recorded traveling through this area. Pocahontas lived in the region as well. In 1664, Virginia established Stafford County from Westmoreland County. Part of the land would later become Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, and Alexandria. During the colonial period, Stafford was a major supplier to Great Britain for fish, tobacco, iron, and flour. As a result, the town of Falmouth was a very important port in the New World. The ironworks would also eventually furnish arms for the colonial soldiers during the American Revolution. The sandstone from Stafford was very important; it was used to build both the White House and the US Capitol building. George Washington grew up in Stafford along with George Mason. Both are considered to be among Virginia's greatest historical figures.

The Rappahannock is great for white water canoeing and all of the rivers are perfect routes of travel to the Chesapeake Bay and its coastal towns to beat the traffic. The county's wildlife and natural surroundings are just as wonderful. On top of all this, Stafford has plenty of public recreation centers and facilities.

It also has three train stations: Leeland, Brooke, and Quantico for VRE trains and just Quantico for Amtrak trains. Interstate 95 and Route 1 are the two main roads that run through the county giving easy transportation to both DC and Richmond.
