Anacostia is one of Washington, D.C.’s most up and coming neighborhoods. Its tree-lined streets and decent-sized yards give the neighborhood an almost suburban-like feel, a nice break from the congestion of nearby D.C.  Anacostia has been making many strides in the past few years to attract new residents by opening new businesses and offering several community programs that bring residents together in a positive light.

All About Location

Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, Anacostia is sandwiched between Anacostia Park to the west and Anacostia First High Reservoir to the east. Its northern border is roughly defined by Pennsylvania Avenue SE, with the southern border being bound by Suiteland Parkway.

Houses with Charm

Rich with history and old architecture, Anacostia offers residents many single-family homes that were built in the early twentieth century. Many of these houses have been updated with renovated kitchens and bathrooms so residents can enjoy the character and charm of an older house without sacrificing modern conveniences. There are also plenty of townhouses throughout the neighborhood, priced at reasonable rates. The numerous condo buildings in the area are also affordably priced, offering convenient features like washers and dryers in unit.

Cruising Through The city

Like any urban neighborhood, Anacostia has many public transportation options such as the Anacostia metro station and the station at Howard Road SE. For residents who own cars, the many major roads available also make it easy to get from place to place. Suiteland Parkway and Pennsylvania SE run east to west through the neighborhood while I-295 makes it easy to go north to south.

New Restaurants Add Flavor to Community

In the past few years, this community has seen the growth of many nice, sit-down restaurants, a new development for an area that was once only offered takeout. Big Chair Coffee and Grill is often credited for being the landmark first restaurant to take root in the community. Though it was forced to close down, it fortunately reopened with many improvements and much revamping. Now, the menu is a combination of classic sandwiches and handcrafted turkey, beef, chicken and salmon burgers. Big Chair also serves up flavorful Ethiopian dishes such as the beef and lamb tibs and veggie/ meat combos. Other popular attractions include the authentic Ethiopian coffee and the famous weekend brunches. Though it has gone through many hardships, Big Chair Coffee and Grill has worked its way into the heart of community members, a shining example of how the neighborhood has a promising future.

Another Anacostia favorite is Uniontown Bar and Grill. Brining fine dining, drinks and entertainment to historic Anacostia, this restaurant serves up classic American cuisine, featuring everything from pasta to salad to seafood. Always busy after work hours, Uniontown has awesome happy hour deals, offering five-dollar appetizers and drinks. Try out some of their unique signature cocktails such as the Flotus, a commanding combination of orange vodka, mango, rum, blue curacao and pineapple juice and the MLK-The Dream, a perfect mix of two cognacs, Amaretto, Triple Sec, pineapple and cranberry juice. Any day of the week, this place will be hopping, with karaoke on Tuesdays, comedy shows on Wednesdays and live music and DJs on the weekends.

Bringing modern, French-inspired cuisine to the heart of historic Anacostia, Nurish Food and Drink serves up light dishes that are both healthy, filling and delicious. Every meal here is sure to be a classy affair. The restaurant has also undergone some recent updates to take your dining experience to the next level. The brand new back deck offers outdoor dining on nice days, and the menu will soon offer classic drinks and carefully crafted cocktails. Nurish also serves a full array of coffee and expresso drinks, as well as a bakery of fresh treats. Make your day sweeter by helping yourself to the irresistible scones, muffins, Danishes and pie slices.

A Nature Getaway

Anacostia Park offers the neighborhood an urban oasis of open green space. Residents will find a number of fun outdoor activities here. Get your heart pumping on a nice run on the river trail, and take advantage of the park’s fitness station, featuring equipment to provide you with a full-body workout. Or, take it easy, bring a blanket and recline by the water’s edge. Lace up your skates and roll on over to the skating pavilion, or make use of the tennis and basketball courts.

This past year, the park also hosted the first ever Anacostia River Festival, hopefully a new tradition for the community. Celebrating the official closing of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, this free event features hands-on art projects, live entertainment and musical performances, boating and fishing tours of historic Anacostia. There is fun for people of all ages at this lively festival, with bike parades and other programs to engage residents in the environment.

Gold is hidden beyond the river

Downtown DC features million dollar condos. As you move out, in any direction, prices are holding firm. Prices locals accept cause sticker shock to those relocating.There is hope. Hope lies just over the bridge in SE Washington. Anacostia is still priced affordably and offers some of the most wonderful views of the city. In the not to distant future, home values across the river will match those in downtown, Capitol Hill, etc. Anacostia dirt cheap today...golden tomorrow
