Guide to Glover Park

Washington DC's Glover Park
Guy Mason Recreation Center in Washington DC's Glover Park

Right next to Georgetown sits Glover Park, one of the quaintest neighborhoods in DC. The biggest perk of Glover Park is that it offers an escape from the usual hustle and bustle of the metro area. For those who don’t mind walking or driving, because the area is not accessible by public transport, Glover Park offers the perfect balance of neighborhood charm paired with a lively commercial strip complete with all the staples.

North of Georgetown

The neighborhood of Glover Park sits just north of Georgetown and Burlieth, beginning at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Whitehaven Parkway NW. To the south and the west, the wooded park of Glover Archbold Park, an extension of Rock Creek Park that envelops the neighborhood. This creates a comfortable and quiet atmosphere, with not a lot of traffic, minus residents walking their dog or driving home from a long day.

Some Condos, Mostly Rowhomes

While weaving through the tree-lined streets of Glover Park, you’ll see that the majority of residences are well-manicured, Washington DC rowhomes. These colonial, federal, and beaux style arts rowhomes generate a ton of character and a unique feel. The main bulk of the homes were built in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, which is shown from block to block.

There are also a couple of condominiums and co-op buildings on the outer edges of the neighborhood, which are generally within the vicinity of Wisconsin Avenue NW or Tunlaw Road NW. These condo buildings are a little newer than the rowhomes, but not new construction by any means, since many of the homes were constructed from the 1960s-1980s.

Laid-Back Restaurants, Retail, and Nightlife

Although most of Glover Park is made up of rowhomes and residences, it also has an exciting, yet easygoing strip of retail, restaurants, and bars suited for either a night out or some quality time with family, all along Wisconsin Avenue. Bourbon and Breadsoda offer a nice atmosphere to grabe a drink and hang out with friends, while Town Hall and Mason Inn offer a fun night out for professionals. Arcuri is a great Italian restaurant offering creative spins on old classics, a must try is their caprese martini or house made limoncello, which makes a great appetizer or desert. There are also some great spots to grab a quick bite with the family like Rockland’s Barbeque and Sprig & Sprout. With Whole Foods Market, Glover Park Hardware, Washington Sports Club and Wide World of Wines nearby, this means that residents don’t even need to hop in the car on the weekends to run errands.

Lots of Professionals, but Family Friendly Too

Naturally, young professionals have gravitated to the area for the DC address, convenient commercial activity, and its close proximity to the city and accessibility via car. Considering how close the neighborhood is to Georgetown University, recent graduates, graduate students, and possibly even enrolled undergrads are bound to consider the area. It also helps that there’s a ton of cool bars and restaurants nearby! Besides the bar scene, this area is ideal for families; it has one of the top-rated elementary schools in the city and is also one of the cities safest neighborhoods.

No Metro Station, but Drivable

Although the neighborhood does not have a metro station, it’s definitely still easy to get around. Downtown Washington DC is just a 15 minute drive away, and there are also several Metrobus lines that run through the neighborhood, providing service to Metrorail stops. One thing that may pose an issue for drivers in the car-centric community is the parking availability. Street parking can definitely be slim, which is why it’s crucial to seek out a home with an included parking spot.

Trails and Community Gardens

Whether it’s a stroll down the embassy-lined streets you seek or more of a traditional nature walk, Glover Park offers a healthy, walkable oasis for those looking to take in nature. There are five parks in the neighborhood and the field next to Stoddert is often reserved for the local, co-ed softball league practice, a neighborhood favorite. Residents who live in Glover embrace the outdoors and often gather together for activities such as the annual “Glover Park Day” held at the nearby Guy Mason Recreation Center. For those looking to hike, there’s a great trail through the woods that goes directly to Georgetown or Battery Kemble Park. Unlike other areas in the area the wildlife is robust and locals often see owls, foxes and deer on weekend nature walks.

The Garden

There are many beautiful gardens in DC. Most are under the auspices of National Capitol Park and Planning while others are just surrounding museums or attractions. The one garden that should be on your "bucket list" is the Milton Grossman Fragrance Garden located next to the Guy Mason Recreation Center in Glover Park. This hidden gem is meticulously maintained by Mr. Grossman himself. The garden is a living memorial to his late wife Dana. The plants fill the air with the sweet aroma's of Spring and Summer. When you have a moment, drop by, sit on a bench and enjoy the everlasting scent of love. And thank Milton for the landmark he has created.
