Guide to Prince Frederick, MD

Running Hare Vineyard in Prince Frederick, MD
Prince Frederick Center in Calvert County

Mostly known for being the county seat of Calvert County, Prince Frederick is more broadly located in the state of Maryland. Situated neatly between two bodies of water, this town features a large housing stock, ample amount of eateries, and some nearby parks.

Center of Calvert County

Prince Frederick is located near the center of Calvert County and its land is bounded by German Chapel Road to the south, Parkers Creek and Tobacco Ridge Road to the east, Mill Creek and Sullivan Branch to the west and Buckler Road is the town’s most northern point. Bordering Prince Frederick to the east is Willowbrook Hills, Dares Beach, and eventually the Chesapeake Bay. Huntingtown is to the north, Barstow, Woodridge, and the Patuxent River are to the west, and Saint Leonard, Mutual, and Calvert Beach-Long Beach sit to the south.

Named for George II’s son Frederick, Prince of Wales

The town was most likely named for George II’s son Frederick, who was Prince of Wales during the time of the town’s original conception. Prince Frederick has thus served as the county seat of Calvert County since 1722, when officials chose a plot of land known as Williams’ Old Field as the spot for the new county courthouse. Linden is the town’s sole representative on the National Register of Historic Places. Its main feature is the historic, two-story frame house, built around 1868. Other features are the ten outbuildings, seven dating back to the 19th century, three of which are of log construction.

Solomons Island Road

Bisecting the town, and supplying the majority of residential, commercial, and institutional buildings in the community, is Route 4—or Solomons Island Road. Driving southbound on this road will take residents to the popular Calvert Cliffs State Park, located near Lusby and Chesapeake Ranch Estates-Drum Point. Going northbound is a quick hit to Huntingtown. Beyond that the road then splits into Route 2 which goes to Owings, Tracy’s Landing and elsewhere. However, if you continue your travels northbound on Route 4 you will eventually find Upper Marlboro and from there major interstates and MARC stations become available.

A Growing Town

The unique zoning of the town not only lands residents near two major bodies of water, but its historic district has seen a steady growth of commercial and residential properties. Beyond the town’s district, which is mainly Route 4, the community becomes more rural with large, detached houses the most common housing available. Condominiums and townhouses can be found, but besides detached homes the second most common feature is the amount of land for sale. This aspect of Prince Frederick brings in plenty of young families looking to create a generation home for families to come.

Fox Run & Local Eateries and Bars

As mentioned, the downtown region of Prince Frederick occupies numerous restaurants, bars, and shopping centers. Fox Run is the largest strip mall in town and features stores like Giant, Kmart, Peebles, Payless, Furniture Gallery, Jo-Ann Fabrics, and Office Depot among others. Beyond Fox Run, and spread out in the community are other stores like Walmart, Food Lion, Safeway, TJ Maxx, and Nick’s of Calvert. Apex Cinemas is the only venue for family entertainment and is located at the Calvert Village Shopping Center.

Across the street is Fiesta Bar & Grill, a go-to restaurant in Prince Frederick. Situated on Central Square Drive, this home-style bar and grill provide both Latin American and Mexican fare served in a casual dig with a full bar. The Green Turtle is a classic sports bar located near the southern end of town. This venue has a casual menu starring burgers, ribs, and a variety of brews, plus plenty of TVs. Three Brothers Pizza is down the street and is an upscale Italian restaurant known for their NY-style pizza, subs, and other Italian-American staples. Sakura Japanese Restaurant is a more Eastern choice and is another popular fine-dining spot in the county seat. A teppanyaki grill chain, this restaurant serves steaks, seafood, traditional sushi, and other classic Japanese entrees. Other places worth checking out are Stoney’s Seafood House, Nagoya Asian Bistro, Yo Mamma’s Wings, La Tolteca Mexican, and Jerry’s Place—a family-owned seafood restaurant offering crab cakes, fish dishes, and homemade desserts.

Neighborhood and State Parks

The Edward T. Hall Aquatics Center is near the northern end of town and has opened its doors to the public since 2010. The center features an indoor ten-lane, 50-meter swimming pool with a diving board, as well as therapy and leisure pools. Hallowing Point Park is a county-owned recreational area west of Prince Frederick and features tennis courts, athletic fields for baseball, softball, and soccer, along with hiking and jogging trails. Other notable places in the county seat are the Battle Creek Cypress Swamp—a local nature preserve—and the Arthur Storer Planetarium, which is located on the grounds of Calvert High School.

Calvert Cliffs State Park is quite a drive but is worth the trip if you have the time. This state-owned, public recreation spot is mostly known for its namesake cliffs and for its abundance of mainly Middle Miocene sub-epoch fossils that can be found on the shoreline. There’s also a small pond for fishing, 13 miles of marked hiking trails, a long sandy beach, and the park is rich in biodiversity as its home to numerous species of flora and fauna.

An unincorporated community in Calvert county, Prince Frederick offers plenty of eateries, bars, recreational spots, and a diverse housing stock. It is mostly known for its great location to two major bodies of water, and for being the county seat to Calvert County.
